🚙 Full-Day Private SUV Tour | Serras de Aire e Candeeiros
The whole story. One full day.
A private 6–7 hour expedition through the remote landscapes, deep geology, and hidden biodiversity of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Nature Park, led by the naturalist who lives inside it.

Some places reveal themselves slowly.
This park is one of them.
A morning gives you a chapter. A full day gives you the book.
This is the tour for people who want to go further than the road, stay longer than the itinerary allows, and leave understanding something permanent about one of Europe’s most extraordinary, and least visited, landscapes.
We travel by private 4×4. We stop where the territory asks us to. We follow your curiosity as much as the route. And by the time the afternoon light hits the limestone, you will see this landscape differently than you did at breakfast.
→ That shift in perception is what the day is for.
THE DIFFERENCE FROM THE HALF-DAY
The half-day tour gives you the introduction.
The full day gives you the depth: more territory, more time at each stop, and the locations that require distance to reach. Including the ones that have no sign, no entry fee, and no crowd.
If you have done the half-day and want more → this is the next chapter.
If you only have one day in the region → this is the one to take.
WHAT YOU’LL SEE
- A Fórnea → The Earth’s Own Amphitheatre
- Nothing prepares you for the first view of A Fórnea. A circular karst depression 500 metres wide and 160 metres deep, formed over thousands of years by water dissolving limestone from below until the surface collapsed inward. No volcano. No earthquake. Just water, time, and chemistry doing something that looks like it shouldn’t be possible. Stand at the rim and the scale silences people every time. I’ll explain the process that made it and why this specific shape, in this specific place, tells us something precise about the geology underneath the entire park.
- Serra dos Candeeiros → The Spine of the Park
- The high ridge that defines the western edge of the park and everything visible from it. Up here the wind is different, the rock is different, and the view reaches from the Atlantic coast to the interior plateaus of central Portugal. This is the landscape in full. The geology you’ve been reading in close detail all day suddenly makes sense at scale. This is also where the park’s silence ismost complete. No road noise. No movement except birds and the occasional kestrel working the thermals above the limestone.
- Vale de Meios → Dinosaur Tracks
- One of the most significant paleontological sites in Europe. 175 million years of Earth history, preserved in open air, exactly where it was left. You will crouch next to a footprint made by an animal that weighed 30 tonnes. I’ll tell you which species made it, which direction it was moving, and what this coastline looked like the morning it passed through. Most people visiting Fátima — 25 minutes from here — have no idea this exists.
- The Stone Sea → Limestone Plateau
- Where the surface tells the story of a tropical seabed that became a mountain range. The evidence is still there, written in the rock beneath your feet. I’ll show you how to read it.
- A Traditional Village Stop → The park is not only geology.
- It is also the people who have lived inside it for centuries — and the architecture, the food, and the land-use practices that limestone country produces. We stop at a traditional village along the route where time moves differently than it does on the coast. Dry-stone walls. Terraced fields. Local restaurants where the menu reflects what grows nearby. Lunch is not included in the price — but the right table is my recommendation to make.
- And much, much more…
HOW THE DAY FLOWS
The route adapts to season, weather and the curiosity of your group. No fixed script. No rushed stops.
A typical full day moves like this:
- Morning — The high plateau and its geology. Panoramic viewpoints that require distance to reach. The landscape before the afternoon heat arrives.
- Midday — A natural pause. The day passes through villages with good local restaurants where I’ll point you toward the right table. Lunch is not included in the price — but the recommendation is.
- Afternoon — The valleys, the biodiversity hotspots, the quieter tracks that most visitors never find. The light on limestone in the late afternoon is its own reason to stay out.
The exact route changes every day.
That is intentional. The park changes every month. A tour that doesn’t change
with it isn’t paying attention.

EVENING EXTENSION
Want to stay until dark?
The park changes completely after sunset.
Bats hunt the karst. Moths emerge from the limestone. The sky, away from any city light, is a different universe.
The evening experience at Retiro da avó Lídia can be added to any full-day tour.
“It wasn’t just a tour — it was an experience that connected us to the land and to each other.”
